History of Givenchy

THE HISTORY OF GIVENCHY

It is the fashion house whose name is synonymous with chic, Parisian luxury. One which has roots that run deep into 1950s France, and today continues to be at the helm of modern fashion. Having been the most beloved brand of international style icon, Audrey Hepburn, it is easy to see why Givenchy has maintained its appeal over a period of decades.

HUBERT JAMES TAFFIN DE GIVENCHY

Since his teenage years the Beauvais born Hubert James De Givenchy was inspired by fashion magazines and dreamed of working at Balenciaga. Since the age of 17 he had worked with what evolved to be some of the world’s greatest designers under the recommendation of Christian Dior, progressing for an assistant to creative director of the flagship store of Elsa Schiaparelli.

“A STAR IS BORN” – The New York Times

By the age of 24, Givenchy founded his own couture house in 1952. His introduction of “separates” in the form of elegant blouses and light skirts would evolve to be key at the turn of the century, leading to the immediate success of his first collection.

Following Givenchy’s magazine cover debuts with Elle and Life magazine in 1953, the interest of the world’s best dressed women turned to the budding fashion house. From Lauren Bacall to Elizabeth Taylor, the cool chic and luxury appeal of Givenchy was reeling in a high-profile client base.

MEETING AUDREY HEPBURN

As though by fate, Givenchy met Audrey Hepburn whilst waiting for a fitting with who he had thought was Great Katherine Hepburn, the classic Hollywood actress. It was here that the pair hit off a forty year friendship. Over the years, Audrey Hepburn became the Givenchy ambassador in her everyday life and on screen – including the iconic Breakfast At Tiffany’s.

Hepburn was fundamental in bolstering Givenchy’s success overseas. When Hepburn became the face of Givenchy’s first fragrance, L’Interdit, Givenchy’s American market was conquered. It might also be noted the actress did it free of charge, as a gesture of friendship to the French designer.
