BEHIND THE BRAND
Lacoste is the brand pioneered by a tennis legend, whose inventions changed the entire sport over the course of sixty decades and revolutionised the clothing industry forever.
Born in 1904, Rene Lacoste wins his first tennis tournament aged 17 and the French Open for the first time in 1924.
At the 1923 David Cup in Boston, René bet a crocodile skin suitcase for a win against James O. Anderson, the top Australian player. Although René lost the match he gained the nickname ‘Le Crocodile’, a catchy term stimulated by journalists and commentators.
It is that same crocodile which reappeared on René’s blazer pocket in 1927, and evolved to become the now famous, very first Lacoste logo.
Not only did René Lacoste win Ten Grand Slam titles at the French Open, Wimbledon and Forest Hills, he was also a prolific inventor, and subsequently, a fashion designer.
Among some of his many successes includes the invention of the world’s first piqué polo shirt, the ball-launching machine, the anti-vibration string damper and the world’s first tennis-specific shoe.
Lacoste: L. 12. 12
The L.12.12 was the name assigned to René Lacoste’s piqué polo shirt, created in 1933 and worn on and off court ever since.
The lightweight, durable, loose-knit cotton ‘piqué’ is Lacoste’s signature fabric. The final garment is known not only for its unique texture and pattern, but for the drive for perfection and attention to fine detail in its production.
FOOTWEAR
In homage to the Lacoste's remarkable sporting and innovative history, Lacoste introduces the brand new L.12.12 footwear collection for Spring/Summer16.
A minimalistic design, clean block colour palette and cupsole court construction are just some of the qualities which makes Lacoste’s new shoe collection the one to watch.
