Nestled away in the French Polynesian islands of the South Pacific hides a self-sustaining, luxury resort on the beautiful atoll of Tetiaroa.
For centuries the small island was the exclusive and favoured retreat of Tahitian royalty with some of their ancient temples still visible to this day - but now Tetiaroa is home to some 35 luxury villas decked out with private pools, beautiful white beaches and an abundance of tropical wildlife.
And all this is down to one of the greatest actors of all time - Marlon Brando – who fell in love with the location while there filming Mutiny on the Bounty in the early 1960s.
By 1967 Brando had bought the whole of Tetiaroa and began to use it as his home, it was then his passion for preserving Tetiaroa’s natural beauty which led him to commission the project to turn it into a self-sufficient, carefree holiday resort so others could bask in the wonder of the location, but sadly he never got to see the finished project before his death in 2004.
Today, a myriad of one-, two- and three-bedroom villas are spread throughout the area to offer maximum privacy to the guests who can enjoy some of the many activities available on the resort – from spa treatments to horse riding, paddle-boarding to bird watching and bike rides to tennis matches.
In keeping with Brando’s vision of transforming Tetiaroa into a sustainable resort that would benefit visitors and locals there is also dozens of naturist guided tours and excursions for visitors to enjoy and find out about the local environment, as well as a research centre and museum.
Rates for staying at The Brando resort on Tetiaroa range from € 1,800 per night for a one-bedroom villa to € 5,400 for the three-berdroom option, with all packages boasting an array of extras including: all meals in all dining venues; all drinks (bottled water, soft drinks, beer, and select wines, Champagne, and spirits); 24-hour dining in the privacy of your villa; one excursion per person per day; one 50 minute spa treatment for one person per villa per day; full laundry service; internet access; one bicycle per guest; access to outrigger canoes, kayaks, paddle-boards and snorkeling equipment.
