Backed by Sony, David Ayer directs what promises to be one of the most daring studio movies this year, in an unrelenting authentic portrayal of the conditions endured, and inflicted, by the Allied forces who entered the heart of Germany in the spring of 1945.
The film is set during the last month of the Atlantic theatre of war, as a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank named ‘Fury’ and her five-man crew on a brutal mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and out-gunned, and with a rookie soldier thrust into their squad, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to deliver the final blow to Nazi Germany.
Despite squirmy scenes making for uncomfortable viewing, the portrayal is grounded in years of research that left the corners of Mr. Ayer’s office crammed with books and war memorabilia. The film, which cost $80,000,000 to make, was shot mostly in Britain and is released in the U.K. on October 24, 2014.
