Lady Gaga is set to star in the role of the Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace in the third season of the hit tv series American Crime Story, which examines the murder of her legendary father Gianni Versace in 1997.
Versace/Cunanan (as it is currently being called) is set to be a 10-episode depiction of the events of 15 July 1997, based on Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors, when the iconic Italian fashion designer was shot dead on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, who shot himself eight days later. Cunanan also murdered five people over the course of three months, although his motives for killing Versace are still unknown.
This will be Gaga’s first appearance on American Crime Story, though she’s had a major role in Ryan Murphy’s (this series executive producer) other anthology series, American Horror Story: Hotel, and appeared in the most recent Roanoke installment.
Rumours had been swirling since the show's initial announcement that Gaga was set to play Gianni's sister Donatella. The American and the Italian designer have had a strong working and personal relationship. The pair walked the most recent Met Gala’s carpet together, and the singer fronted Versace’s Spring 2014 campaign, and on her 2013 album Artpop, Gaga shows her love for the designer with track ‘Donatella’.
Production is expected to begin in the first few months of next year, as filming is currently ongoing for the second season titled deluge, which focuses on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The first season called The People v O.J. Simpson won critical acclaim, as well as a host of accolades and awards including 9 Emmy’s.
